Dexter Gold: If the water level is just 1cm below the side, then the overall density of the boat is virtually the same as that of the water. All you have to do is work out the total mass for the boat & people that gives you the same density as water. As you can work out the volume of the boat and the density of water is 1000kg/m^3, the rest is easy.

Raye Tredennick: you can make a boat of any shape the only thing is that the force of boynacy must be greater than the weight of anything you put on it or it will not float the classic boat shape is because it provides a very large volume to applied the boyancy the greater the volume the greater this force becomes take this example if you have a container of water get a plastic plate and place it on the surface you will find that it floats now cut it into a square it still floats now add weight to the square at a certain point the force of gravity down will overcome the boyancy force upward and it will sink...Show more
