2 Way Radios ( Is there a radio for everything)?

Charissa Riley: I don't think what you describe exists.

Coleen Carignan: You can not pick up GPS, but there are radio receiver models out there that cover a very wide range of frequencies. These can pretty much listen to shortwave, AM radio, FM radio, cb, ham radio, public safety, construction, business band, weather, railroads, marine, etc. Such receivers like icom and AOR. You will not however, find a radio that receives all that and be able to transmit. They do not make radios like that.

Kizzy Hett: Most of what you refer to can be picked up on the little $180 Yaesu VX3 I carry with me every where. It is a low power transmitter as well, BUT requires an amateur radio license to transmit. Much of what you are talking about is encrypted or encoded and GPS is a pure digital Satellite signal requiring sophisticated circuitry. For that, my Android cell phone does just fine. Much police and fire radio is going to a trunking system that my VX3 cannot handle exc! ept one channel at a time. Walkie Talkies vary a lot and just be cause you have one does not mean you can talk to someone else who may have a different kind. I carry 3 different kinds in my truck but 2 of them are incompatible. Also other than FRS, most walkie talkies require a license to transmit and you must be authorized to talk to the other users, i.e. police fire, construction, etc....Show more
