Mitchel Demry: I am interested on an approximate figure and not an exact figure. A percentage of the population would be also OK but I need a credible source.
Stanton Villao: I don't think there's a way to directly calculate this number. Some corporations have a very high number of shareholders, and it would be impossible to determine how many of those shareholders overlap. The best you could get is surveys that show what percentage of people own stocks. Multiply this by the number of people, and you have a rough guess. Something like 56.9 million households owned stock in 2005. EDIT: sorry about that, here's the link I meant: http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/wellspent/a......Show more
Cherry Stampka: That number will change on a daily basis since stocks are bought and sold every day. I (a single shareholder) might sell all of my stock holdings on a given day and those stock holdings might be purchased by a dozen different investors/shareholders.
